Write an opening line/paragraph

Are you up to a challenge?
I came across this wonderful illustration on Stephen Gardner's Sketch of the Day. Stephen has some other remarkable drawings on his blog - do pop over and have a look.

What about writing the opening line or paragraph for a book?

Either put it in your own blog, and come and tell us where it is, or do it as a comment on mine.

Here is mine - I'm sure you can do better:

Margaret never did finish the dusting, or the vacuuming, or hang the washing out that day. When Alan came whistling through the front door in the late afternoon, he found her duster where she had dropped it, alongside the half-eaten donut, his first edition Robinson Crusoe spoilt beyond belief, bleeding into the carpet.
